The name “Wagon Road 1890” pays homage to Bot River’s rich history as a trading hub during the late 19th century. In the 1800s, Bot River was a vital crossroads for traders, farmers, and travelers journeying between Cape Town and the inland territories.
The “Kaapsche Wagen Weg” wound its way through the valley, connecting the Overberg’s fertile farmlands to Cape Town’s vibrant markets. It was a lifeline for communities, with wagons carrying everything from fresh produce to barrels of locally crafted wine. The road passed directly by what is now the Bot River Hotel, making it a natural stop for weary travellers seeking rest, food, and camaraderie.
Today, the Wagon Road 1890 Restaurant honours this legacy by offering a warm, inviting space where guests can gather, just as those early travellers did. We had a phenomenal time visiting you guys – everything was just amazing. Lovely view, delicious food and friendly service. We were about 45 bikers – heaters was put on for us and we were so comfortable. We will definitely be visiting your establishment again.
